Detailed Sandhya Vandanam with Full Instructions

This post is actually on Sandhya Vandan which brahmins usually do after they have got done their upanayanam. When my upanayanam was done I also had to do sandhyavandam daily but there was hardly any text on the internet which had the complete sandhyavandam in it with instructions. In this post I have tried to capture the most detailed Sandhyavandam which is the Yajurveda Sandhyavandam. The text which I had was in telugu and I sat together with two others to translate that entirely into english and ensured that we get the right pronounciation by listening to the audio as well.
In this endeavour I would like to thank the following people who made the Knowledge Transformation and Document Management (KTDM) possible.
First in the list is Mr. Tirumala Rao. He was my teacher for Sandhyavandam and taught extremely well all the aspects of Sandhyavandan and very clearly also.
The next in the list is Mr. K Gautham Kumar. He is my cousin and is currently pursuing his graduation in Electronics and Communications Engineering. He did close to 12 pages of translation of the text in telugu and did entire typing work in Microsoft Word.
Finally it was Miss. Rashmika, another cousin of mine, currently employed with WIPRO Technologies in their WASE Program. She started the intial translation work but was later carried over by Gautam.
Here is the entire text:

Nice piece of work.

I wonder if you could put the pictures of the various mudras in Mudhrapradarshanam. Gayatri mantram is supposed to be not beneficial, till one does these mudras.

hi Yash and Team
tremendous work, deserves a lot of appreciation.I have been doing sandhavandanam for the past 8 years. there seem to be some typographical errors and some of the mantras are not in proper order. pl. go through it and rearrange them. Proper pronunciation of the mantras is essential.
The work you have done is really excellent. god bless your team.

Dear Chaitanya,

In India while one does Sankalpam its read as "..... Subhe sobhane muhurthe, adhya brahmane, dwitiya padharthe, vaivaswanthara manvanthare, pradhamapade, ....."

Till here its ok to read in USA, latter goes on " .....Jambhu Dweepe( Means more or less Asia continent, so pls read as Uttara America Dwipe), Bharata Varshe Bharata Khande( Means ancestors of King Bharata at Bharat Country), so you may pls read this part as "Ikya America deshe", Meroho Dakshina digbhage( Means towards south to Mount Meru), so you may pls read this as Canada Khanda Dakshina digbhage, then mantion the state and direction to which river you are like, ".....Sanfrasnsisco Nagare, Dakshina Digbhage....", then countinue as usual with ".....Yajamanasya Swagruhe......", as such the power is in Karma Bhoomi which is mother India, still this uchharna is only as a to compensate the location addressing to Matha Gayathri...

Hi Yash,

I am a follower of Rig Veda. Rig Veda achamana starts with "keshavaya swaha".

I think what you have posted is the Sandhyavandanam procedure for Rig Veda and not Yajur Veda. The Yajur Veda Achamana starts with Achythaya namaha, ananthaya namaha and not with "keshavaya swaha".

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Regards,
Harsha.

Jaya Krishna Nimmagadda said...

Dear Harsha,

Any sankalpam starts with Om Keshavaiah swaha, Om Narayanaya swaha, Om madhavaya swaha.......

The difference in Rig, Krishna / Sukhla Yajur pacticesis the moola manthra after the "apohista the manthrnam....."

Family procudeure may even vary that some differ in the manthra patanam at the time of arghyam..

Then the Morning, Noon & Evening sooryopasthanam is totally the one one differs with one another. The major difference is that RIG has Largest NOON - Suryopasthanam.

Hope, I cud do as much I can.

hey appreciate your work. I love to do sandhyavandanam every day, but I felt some day that what I am doing in the corect way or is there any thing wrong. Especially I do not know how to perform during Uttara Mudras, even in the books they either skip it or tell that this has to be tought by a teacher. Even in your soft copy you skipped that section. It starts like this " surabhi, gynana, chakrecha..after dhyanam. Can u please share with me any video/audio about this.

By the way I am from AP staying at HYD, so if any courses held some where or any info on bhagavan sri shankaracharya is really appreciated.

Regards

Hi Thanks a lot for posting your work on net

Very useful to modern day brahmins who want to continue with the rituals but are not familiar with mother tongue. The instructions can be a little more elaborate and a little bit of thathparyam would help people understand why they are doing each of the rituals and why the sequence.

I am sure your effort will go a long way in spreading hinduism and spirituality - hari ravi

However you can find full audio and video format of krishna yajurveda sandhya vandanam. Taking the print out sandhya vandanam given by yash, you can follow the procedure provided in you tube.

The link is http://www.youtube.com/user/sanatanadharma123
On the right side click see all and you can find 6 videos on the procedure of sandhyavandanam.

Thank you yash. Thank you all.
I just thought of sharing with you all.

Great work..!
I have a question can we use beeds(rudraksha, spatika, tulasi) maala for counting the no. of times we are chanting gayatri mantram..?

Jaya Krishna Nimmagadda said...

Gayatthri Japa has to be performed with hand count & is the only method. Other Japa's can be done with Tulasi & Rudrakshamala.

Hi,

good work, It is help ful to youngsters. But there is a small adition needed.

in the japasanam it is needed that should we add to our Karanyaasaha,Ajgunyaasaha after these we can conclude japasanam.

You can use any rudrakha / parika mala for count.

and also add some shanthi manthra's.

that would be very nice.

regards,

SREEKANTH KARANAM

The pravara includes names of Rishis corresponding to one's Gothra.
For bharadwaja gothra :it is (Aangirasa, Baruhaspatya, bharadwaja) trayarusheya

Correct me if i am wrong, other gothras, it would be useful for all if we can find that info, and post.

yash,

nice work. As an extension, please put the whole thing MP3 downloadable. It will be of great help to the next gen youngsters.

Thanks for the amazing, elaborate explanation of Sandhyavandhanam. I`m trying to coax/convince my 14year old son, who recently got his Upanayanam done, to learn to do Sandhyavandanam . His dad doesn`t do, so its difficult for me to guide him even though we have the text format. Is it also possible to have video of Yajurveda Sandhyavandanam-we are tamil Iyer living outside India.thank you.

Hello Yashasvi,

You have done a phenominal and great work transliterating Sandhyavandam in to English. This is very useful for present generation boys who are not able to learn either native language nor sanskrit. This is very useful for my son who recently got his Upanayanam done. Thank you.

I just saw this by google search (not yet completely read) and at a glance I got a good impression, so, I wanted to post in our website and copied it and posted to http://www.brahminsnet.com/forums/entry.php/59-Detailed-Sandhya-Vandanam-with-Full-Instructions for the benefit of the brahmins in our forum.
If any objections I will remove it.
thanks,

Why is it Maadhyanahnika (afternoon) Sandhyavandanam and Sayam (evening) Sandyavandam procedures not mentioned.

The evening Sandhyavandanam is a must because it is the first Sandya that one does after upanayanam.

I therefore request you to include those also.

Hi, Can you please let me know what is the posture to sit and perform sandhyavandam, if a pic is uploaded it will be gr8. Thank you.

Mynampati Ganesh Sarma said...

Certain Hidden Practices needs to be followed during Gayathri Japam.

Posture to Sit : During Morning and Afternoon sit facing east and during evening sit facing west.

Argyam : During Morning Stand and perform argnya pradhaanam. During Afternoon and Evening Sit and perform Argnya Pradhaanam.

Basma Dhaaranam (Applying Viboothi on forehead) : During morning while applying viboothi mix it with water and apply. For afternoon and evening , need not mix water in viboothi.

me would be happy if some one be kind enough to provide Telugu trasnsilatiojn for this,

we are telegu brahmins settled in tamilnadu 600 hundred years back . In english version we dont get right pronunciation . We can not read and write in telugu also > if hindi version of text is provided for all 3 time prayer I will be grateful to you

Prajwal said...

The pravara depends upon gothras of the persons, above one is for one particular gothra - Koundiniya. Kindly ask any well versed poojary or veda preacher, he may be helpful to just get that pravitha stanza, you can note for yourself and complete sandyavandanam. It is slightly different for you and your son as well.

For those who are seeking language translations, kindly use softwares like Google translate, copy the text from here and paste it in translate software or website.
